Summary: Men Stopping Violence is an organization that seeks to create a safer world for
women through education and training of men. It believes that when men are informed about
the issue of domestic violence, about its false premises and negative consequences, they are
less likely to be perpetrators of the vice themselves or to be silent when they see fellow men
subjecting women to domestic violence.
Stopping Domestic Violence: Role of Non-Violent Men
Even though men too are victims of domestic violence, the overwhelming victims of
the vice are women with men being its main perpetrators. Equally important to note is that
men who perpetrate domestic violence are not born violent (Funk, 1993). Rather, they
become violent through gendered socialization that holds that men should be aggressive and
controlling while women should be passive (Messner, 2016). Just as socialization has resulted
in men being violent, it can also be used to make men non-violent.
Non-violent men can help reduce the problem of violence against women through by
changing attitudes and beliefs among men that make it acceptable to commit violence against
women (Messner, 2016). This can be done, as the example of Men Stopping Violence shows,
through educating their fellow men who are violent. Once violent men understand the impact
of their actions on their wives and children, they are less likely to continue perpetrating the
vice.
Additionally, non-violent men can help reduce the problem of domestic violence by
speaking out against men who are violent towards women (Messner, 2016). Such speaking

out will help make the practice unpopular and socially unacceptable. The fear of being
ostracized by their peers may act as a deterrent among violent men.
In conclusion, the problem of gender-based violence is not just a women’s problem, it
is a men’s problem as well. Men, therefore, should be part of the solution. Non-violent men
can help end this problem by educating violent men about its false premises and negative
consequences and speaking out against it any time that it occurs.
