To start, you canA reader of any literary work connects to a story through the theme. The theme is
connected to the internal journey of the protagonist. Thus, the theme is the heat of the story. The
reader has someone to root for and someone to care about. In most instances, the reader might
relate to the theme, creating an even deeper connection with the story. The theme is the main
idea being expressed by the author. When the reader can relate to the main idea, then they get
deeply rooted in the book. They develop interest. In some instances, the theme provides solutions
to challenges that the reader might be facing in real life.
In the story, Money the least of his worries, Hilda Gathanga explores relationships and
how cultural and financial dynamics shape them. It is based on a young man who wants to marry
a girl but is concerned about all the cultural and financial obligations involved. The relationship
of these two is influenced by other external forces such as culture and the man’s financial
capabilities. Wambua had to think of the dowry negotiations, the wedding plans and other
preparations such as the girl’s family visiting his parent’s home (Ce 245).
Gathanga’s story impacts life in many ways. In my case, as a reader, it triggers me into
thinking about the many factors that can influence a relationship. As the story unfolds, it
becomes clear that the man has many obligations to fulfil to get to marry the girl of his dreams.

Although cultures differ, Gathanga’s narration makes me think about certain aspects in society
that can hinder or act as an obstacle for young people thinking of starting their own families. As
a result, themes tend to help the reader connect with the characters used in works of literature. It
becomes easy when a character is experiencing issues that the reader can directly relate within
their everyday lives.
