Successful Teams

The New Zealand rugby team is the most effective and successful rugby team of its
time. It has won more than three-quarters of all the competitions that it has taken part in
(Prowse, 2018). According to the readings, one of the ways through which a team can prove
its effectiveness is through its success in whatever it does (Lumen Learning, 2021). The
rugby team has, over the years, been very successful given the many times it has won
matches. The team has won three World Cups and has been able to accomplish more wins
than any other sports team. Team managers also have a role in building an effective team
(Lumen Learning, 2021). All players in the team, including the coach, are treated as equals,
and this is a key characteristic of an effective team.
The team’s coaches and trainers pass on the exceptional ethos of the game to young
players. The ethos emphasizes respect for the game, sportsmanship, and respect for other
players (Prowse, 2018). By the time new players are recruited, they already possess not only
the necessary skills but also the ethos needed to succeed in the game. The readings stress on
the need of the manager to understand the nature of the team, and this is evident in how the
coaches and teachers of the rugby team conduct themselves (Lumen Learning, 2021). The
players are nurtured from the school level to the semi-professional level, and then the best is
selected to join the national team.
Overall, the success of this team largely depends on the laid down systems and
processes. The success of the team is founded on four main elements. First, the players are
trained from an early age, and the team’s identity and aura founded on their history of success
help produce a kind of passion and love for the team that is evident among the players
(Prowse, 2018). Additionally, the team has a unique way of executing their game plan, and
every player has to play that way. Lastly, the unique ethos of the team is taught early, and any

player joining the team understands how the game is played. Such processes and unique
elements have led to the success of the team.
