The narrator, Scout, tells the story from a white girl’s perspective. She was the daughter
of a white lawyer, Atticus. White people dominate the courtroom, making it difficult for Tom
Robinson to get a fair trial despite the lawyer delivering a convincing argument showing
Robinson’s innocence (Lee, 2010). From a different perspective, things would have turned out
differently for Robinson as well as the Ewell family. If the judge was black and the jury
unbiased, then the ending would have been different. This paper provides an alternate account of
events from a different narrator’s perspective by assuming that Scout was a black girl.
Tom Robinson did not rape Ewell, and all the facts exonerated him from the false
accusation. Atticus, his black lawyer, presented his facts in court. Jem insists that Atticus has his
facts right, and he will win the trial. He believes that the evidence is strong enough to set
Robinson free. He also understands that Robinson stands a fair trial regardless of his race. The
evidence matters and not a person’s race.
Atticus is picked to represent Robinson because he is a good lawyer who is known for his
hard work in the cases he has worked on in the past. He is the right man to prove that Ewell is an
abusive father and that he beat his daughter up after he found her kissing Robinson, a black man.
The problem was that Mayella, a white girl kissed a black man. Ewell would not have had such a
problem had his daughter kissed a white man. He is prejudiced against Robinson and wants to
manipulate the courts and have them punish Robinson for being a black man.
However, times have changed. Atticus manages to prove to the court that Mayella was
not raped. No doctor was called to confirm the rape allegations. If she is not treated in any
hospital, then it cannot be proven beyond reasonable doubt that she was indeed raped. As Atticus

close examine Mayella, he probes her into admitting the truth. Mayella, amidst sobs, manages to
tell the court that she was beaten by her father, and not Robinson, as earlier stated. She says that
she lied because her father asked her to lie. Mayella also admits that she loves Robinson, but her
father cannot let the relationship be because he dislikes the man.
Robinson is freed. The jury found that Ewell was indeed abusive, and he had compelled
his daughter to lie in an attempt to have Robinson jailed. Robinson is grateful that Atticus had
helped him get a fair trial. The judge is disappointed in Atticus, and he asks that a new chare be
pressed against him for dishonesty and for brutally beating his daughter.
Tom Robinson’s family takes gifts to Atticus’ family and tanks the lawyer for his
exemplary work on the case. Tom’s jury gave a reasonable trial based on all the evidence
presented to them. The man was not guilty. A white man wanted to punish him unfairly, and
there was outright bias against the man. Scout finally understands that racism exists, but the
courts always ensure that justice prevails. She also understands that people can make false
accusations because of racism and malice. Bob Ewell apologizes to his daughter for beating her
and to Robinson for the unfair accusations. He is ready to face the consequences of his actions.
Scout is happy that justice has prevailed.
