Unit 5: Discussion Board

The most compelling topics learned in class include Balanced Scorecard and capital
budgeting. In the balanced scorecard, I understand that it is a tool that effectively measures
several aspects of an organization. It can be used in analyzing the financial performance, the
consumer’s level of satisfaction, and even tracking the progress that the company has been
making over the years. In capital budgeting, I appreciate the knowledge gained in evaluating
the level of effectiveness of an investment. I learned the various tools such as ROI and IRR
that can be used to know if a project is viable. It is an excellent topic to learn when the aim of
to venture into the investment business.
Participating in the discussion was effective in enhancing my learning as I knew the
thoughts of other students. It was like a discussion forum where we shared our ideas and helped
each other in the section with challenges. The response of other students made me better
understand some of the areas that I need to improve. It was the right way of learning my
strength and weakness to know what works best for me and what I need to focus more on.
However, I still need clarity on the various frameworks that can be used in the balanced
scorecard. The frameworks are useful in solving an organizational problem but need to be
used effectively (Oberhiolzer & Ziemerick, 2012). A key concern is on the tool’s decision-
making process and how it affects the operations of an organization. Also, I would like to
know if an organization can use the balanced scorecard tool and still fail to improve its
performance level.
One of the approaches that could have yielded additional valuable information is the
online research. Investigating each of the topics gave extra information that was relevant in
understanding the issues in discussion. Also, there is the aspect of information exchange in
the discussion board. The strategy was fundamental in ensuring that the not well-understood
areas are clearly presented and well elaborated. The main focus is not what other students

post but the views and opinions on the same topic. One can easily highlight the challenges
they face in a given case and get the needed assistance without compromising any issue.
