Urinary System and Coding

The urinary system is at the heart of waste excretion from the body. Through the kidneys,
it filters out wastes and excess water from the blood to form urine which goes to the bladder and
is periodically eliminated when a person urinates (Sampaio & Favorito, 2020). Thus, the urinary
system plays an important role in maintaining a strong and healthy body. Additionally, the
system helps to maintain the body’s chemical and water balance which is needed for other
processes to be performed effectively.
The information learnt while studying the urinary system is important in coding and
billing. Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the urinary system helps one to enter
accurate codes for various medical procedures performed on the urinary system (Rogers, 2020).
For instance, an understanding of the anatomy of the urinary system will help the coder to better
understand certain terms used in coding such as cystoscopy which means a procedure done on
the bladder. Such knowledge helps the coder to always enter accurate codes and, therefore,
enable accurate billing.
The study of the urinary system’s anatomy and physiology also helps one to understand
how various urinary system’s diseases affect patients. Some of the common diseases of the
urinary system include kidney stones, interstitial cystitis, and urinary tract infection (UTI)
(Sampaio & Favorito, 2020). Kidney stones are clumps of calcium oxalate that form on various
parts of the urinary tract. They form when chemicals found in urine form a solid mass after
concentrating enough. Interstitial cystitis is a condition that is common among women and often
involves pain and bladder pressure. Lastly, urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when the urinary
tract system becomes infected by bacteria.
