To start, you canI chose the peer-reviewed article “Decision‐making in nursing practice: An
integrative literature review” by Nibbelink & Brewer (2018) because it has crucial
relevance to my area of practice, which is acute nursing care. I chose this article because it talks
about decision-making, which is an important facet of palliative and hospice care for individuals
with chronic conditions. My goal is to become an acute care nurse, and I believe that this article
will expand my knowledge in the management and treatment of patients with terminal conditions
(Adam, Osborne & Welch,2017). According to Walden University (2019), peer-reviewed articles
have been written by professionals with vast experience in the subject area. Following the
recommendations of the APA referencing style, the following is the article selected for my study.
Nibbelink, C. W., & Brewer, B. B. (2018). Decision‐making in nursing practice: An integrative
literature review. Journal of Clinical Nursing, 27(5-6), 917-928.
The importance of decision making in medical practice cannot be overemphasized since
life and death lies in the hands of the physicians (Abelsson & Bisholt,2017). The type of
institutional care provided to the patient with chronic conditions determines the rate of recovery
as well as mortality attributed to medical errors or inadequate delivery of prompt services. As a
student nurse practitioner, it is essential to research the process of decision making, the
stakeholders involved, and timely life-saving measures that have to be applied to enhance the
longevity of the patients. Similarly, a literature review on various studies that guide decision
making is equally important in guiding evidence-based care (Kleinpell, Cook, & Padden,2018).
The nurses, as professionals, need to have current information on best practices that can be
incorporated in acute care.
I utilized the Walden University Library search engine to find my article (Walden
University, n.d.). The Walden University Library gave me access to various peer-reviewed
articles and scholarly articles that support my main argument on decision making in nursing
practice. I did not experience any difficulties while searching for the article. The Walden
University Library search engine enabled me to quickly find the article that was relevant to the
subject area (Walden University Library, n.d.). The library has several databases that allow
students to filter the information based on the keywords and the subject area, which saves time.
Equally, it only allows the students to access credible, peer-reviewed, and scholarly articles
hence avoiding predatory journals.
Further, I located the EBSCO database within the library that provided me with a range
of articles on decision making in acute nursing care (Walden University Library, n.d.). This site
would be useful to my fellow students in handling discussions and assignments since it provides
open access to various books, articles, journals, conference proceedings, and periodicals. EBSCO
database saves time because it only provides students with materials that are relevant to the
subject area (Walden University, 2019). These articles also contain newly published research on
nursing care, which makes it credible. Notably, the students also need to have relevant computer
skills to enable them to navigate through the search engines and the database. Some of my
colleagues did not know how to use the database and access relevant journals. However, I was
able to direct them to the webinars available in the University Library that explain the steps
followed in navigating through the library and the search for scholarly journals within the
databases (Walden University Writing Center, n.d.).
