What data from the practice site will support the project development?
My selected clinical site is owned by a dentist in the Haymarket Virginia area. Dr. Lowe and her
team works with all ages. At this practice, some of the services include dental implants,
ClearCorrect, Invisalign, family dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and sedation dentistry. The
atmosphere is warm and very friendly.
Oral health is a major concern for school-going children in the United States and other parts,
especially in developing countries. According to the CDC (2021), approximately 20 percent (at
least 1 in 5) of kids aged five and eleven suffer from untreated tooth decay. For teens and kids
aged between five and nineteen, the rate of untreated cavities is two times higher for those from
low-income families (25 percent) compared to those from higher-income families (12 percent).
Typically, poor oral health has negatively impacted children’s school attendance, academic
performance, quality of life, and achievement later in life.
How does the data relate to the project?
This project (oral health promotion and education) aims to inform oral health practice in school
settings by improving the children’s knowledge of the importance of preventing dental caries and
other oral issues. As an intervention, oral health training and education will address the clinical
issue by informing children about oral health risks and their actions to maintain healthy teeth and
gums. This includes measures like brushing teeth using fluoride toothpaste and toothbrush twice
a day (before bed and early in the morning), the essence of sealants, the types of foods to avoid,
and those that can strengthen teeth and improve oral health hygiene. The argument is that oral
education is required to achieve better oral health outcomes in schools compared to using other
methods only, such as policy change or treatment with sealants
