Workshop Plan Part 1

Part 1A: Workshop Details
Title “Role of the Teacher in the 21 st Century.”

The workshop aims at sensitizing new teachers on the changing roles in
the profession. The modern-day teacher has a new role to play in the
integration of technology in the classroom, and this will be covered
during the workshop.

Explanation Teachers will engage in an in-depth discussion on how they think that
technology will impact on their role in the classrooms. The discussion
will be moderated by experienced teachers, some of whom have been
teaching before technology was incorporated into the classrooms, and
after its incorporation. Attendants will also be provided with materials
and resources; these will mostly be online materials. They will take the
materials with them and will read them after the conference. After the
engagement session, there will be two speakers. They will deliver
speeches that will mostly shed light on the changing roles of a teacher,
what to do, and how to adapt as the roles will continue evolving.
Objective/Purpose The objective of the conference is for new teachers who will be joining
the teaching profession to get oriented. The attendants will learn a lot
from experienced teachers, and they will also learn from each other
through open-discussions. Teachers will get tips on how to navigate the
teaching profession, as well as how to tap onto new opportunities into

the market by advancing their education in fields that will make them
more marketable in the job market. Mainly, teachers will be guided as
they take their first steps into their career journeys.

Target Audience BAE Bachelor of Arts Education

The conference targets Ashford University education graduates in 2020.
Theory Role theory is concerned with patterns of behavior that are prevalent to
groups of people as well as the underlying affective and cognitive
phenomena (Sjølie, 2014). One of the most realistic ways to view
teaching is by looking at a teacher’s professional conduct as the center
focus of their impact in the classroom. Teachers are a group of social
actors whose feelings and thoughts are manifested in their behavior
when teaching. The act of teaching is a complex behavior to study
because of the many factors that influence it; time is one of these
factors. Teachers’ roles keep changing and evolving with time.
The incorporation of technology in the modern classroom has changed
the role of the teacher significantly. Also, the society within which a
teacher operates has also changed. Students have access to the internet
and different technological gadgets. Thus, the type of students that the
teacher is interacting with is different. The subject matter content has
also changed. In real sense, even the individuality of the teacher can be
influenced by all these changes. Thus, through the conference, the role
theory will be explored. Teachers will be oriented on their changing
roles and their place in the 21 st -century classroom.

not strictly follow the
warning from the timer, the

speaker who fails to finish on
time to wrap up the

Explain how it supports the

“Focus on how English language teachers, teacher
educators, and administrators can and should use
technology in and out of the classroom.”

Technology provides a changing teaching and learning
environment as it continues to evolve. This makes it necessary
to make teachers aware of how they will be using technology
inside and outside of the classroom. They will use technology
o create a learning environment that is learner-centred. In
solving roadblock #1, this standard will be used to remind
teachers that technology extends their teaching role even
outside the classroom. For instance, they might have to use
asynchronous tools, such as conferencing systems and e-mails
to communicate with learners in contexts outside the
classroom environment. Thus, the advantages of multimedia
technology are that teachers will have unlimited access to the
teacher and learning resources (Pun, 2013). Also, it is
important for the teacher to understand how to use technology

and balance between work and personal life. The intrusion of
technology into the teacher’s private lives can make it hard
for teachers to love a balanced life because students are able
to contact the teacher anytime. As such, it is important for a
teacher to establish working rules on contact hours and how
students should contact them. Such tips will be given during
the conference, and the speaker will be guided by the above
professional standard.

How it supports the
solution to Roadblock #2.

Standard 10: leadership and management (NAEYC Program
Standards, 2020).
The standard emphasizes on effective management and
demonstration of leadership qualities. The speakers will
demonstrate time management skills because these are
important for every teacher. Teachers prepare lesson plans
which can only be effectively implemented if they manage
their time properly. This skill will be emphasized during the
conference, and the facilitator will demonstrate to the teachers
the best ways through which they can manage time in their
classrooms.

Part 3: Environment and Materials
Environment The ideal environment for this conference will be a

conference hall. A space that can accommodate the expected
number of participants. Also, the hall should be in a quiet
place to avoid distractions from outside noises. Preferably, the
hall should be arranged in a semi-circle where attendants will
be able to maintain eye contact with one another. Also, the
speakers should be able to see everyone to ensure that they
are able to engage with the audience in an effective manner.

Needs and/or Supplies The supplies needed will include; chairs, tables, table cloths,
tablets, handouts, microphones, water bottles, snacks,
notebooks, pens, a whiteboard, and serviettes.

The facilitator understands that participants have individual
learning needs and differences. Thus, the aim is to create a
conference hall that is inclusive and one that accommodates
the needs of different participants. Thus, the conference will
be modified to ensure that it creates an appropriate
environment for the speakers to engage different people, and
also for the participants to engage in discussions with each

other. The facilitator will thus use the understanding of
diverse learning needs and individual differences to create a
conference environment that will ensure an inclusive
environment where healthy and successful discussions will be
held.

INTASC Standard #4: Content Knowledge
“The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of
inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches
and creates learning experiences that make the discipline
accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of
the content” (Assessment & Support Consortium, 2013).

The facilitator understands that tools and other equipment are
necessary for the mastery of the content to be delivered during
the conference. The facilitator will thus provide as many of
the required tools as possible. However, a shortage is bound
to occur in the event that a higher turn-out that the expected
number is experienced. In such a case, improvisation of
materials and sharing of the available materials among the
attendants will facilitate a smooth running of the conference.
The materials and supplies will be used to facilitate discussion
and ensure that the speakers enjoy an interactive session with

the participants. Also, materials such as tablets and handouts
will ensure that participants have access to the content being
delivered.

Part 4: Strategies

The programs prepare students for their future roles in
dealing with young individuals. Most of the programs above
prepare professionals on how to interact with young children,
mostly as teachers. Since this conference ushers teachers into
their new roles in the real world, they will thus benefit from it
as well. Early childhood teachers will be given tips on how to
inspect the learning environment and ensure that it is safe for
the 21 st -century child. Children have access to technology
from a very young age, both at home and at school. During
the conference, teachers will be reminded of their role in the
integration of technology in the classroom, especially when
dealing with young learners. Through grouping, teachers

dealing with young children will be in one group, while those
dealing with other levels will be categorized in their
respective groups. This will ensure that information is
tailored to meet the needs of individual teachers.
The conference will sensitize early-childhood educators
on their role in fostering a safe and comfortable environment
in the 21 st -century classroom. For instance, they will be
engaged in a discussion on some of the encouraging and
positive words that a teacher can use in class to help make the
children feel comfortable and secure within the learning
environment. All the above programs will benefit from the
workshop as members will be given tips that will help them
adapt to their new roles in the real world better. Besides,
children learning experiences vary from social, cognitive,
emotional to physical. All the individuals that mold these
diverse growth areas need to understand their role well as this
ensures the holistic development of the child. Also, early
childhood educators make a huge impact on a child’s future
success; hence proper preparation of these teachers is
important in ensuring that they have a clear understanding of
what their role pertains.
Strategies Engage technology

The first technology that will be used is the incorporation of

technology in the delivery of content during the conference.
Technology will be used in a variety of ways. First, the
speakers will use multimedia; these will include videos and
vivid images which will be projected on the whiteboard.
Also, teachers will be able to access these mages and videos
using their tablets. The use of various multimedia resources
will successfully enable the speakers to add zing to the
conference session. Besides, multimedia resources can
stimulate multiple senses at a time (Shean, 2012). Therefore, it
will be possible to meet the needs of different teachers whose
learning styles are different. The speaker will also be able to
hold the attention of the participants for a longer time. Also,
it is one of the ways through which the speakers will create a
collaborative classroom and be able to engage with the
participants with much more ease. The workshop experience
will be enhanced.
The tablets that participants will be using will be
linked to the speaker’s projector and computer. This will
ensure that students can communicate with the speakers
through drawings, text, as well as diagrams. Technology will
be incorporated constructively and facilitate artistic
expression among the teachers who will be taking part in the
workshop. Through technology, everyone will have a

platform to express their ideas, and this will be effective in
creating an interactive session (Shean, 2012). Teachers will be
able to reach more and learn from each other as well as from
the speakers.

Brainstorming
Brainstorming is an effective strategy that will allow the
teachers to identify what they know about the topic as well as
what they need to know. The speakers will project a few sub-
topics related to the main topic on the whiteboard. Through
their tablets, teachers will highlight what they know and areas
they feel they need to learn. Based on the feedback, speakers
will then identify pertinent areas that teachers need more
information on and spend quality time facilitating discussion
on those areas. Brainstorming is an effective strategy as it
activates prior knowledge (Shean, 2012). In this case, teachers
have spent a considerable amount of time preparing to be
teachers. They have also acquired substantial knowledge that
has prepared them for their roles as teachers. The objective of
the conference is to activate prior knowledge and help
teachers highlight some of the skills that will help them
navigate with more ease. Also, through brainstorming, the
speakers and facilitator will capture the interest of the

teachers, and it is a great way of establishing an interactive
session. Speaker’s will adjust their presentation and content
based on the feedback they will receive after the
brainstorming session. The strategy will set the pace for the
